Sean Keel – “melon”

Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Sean Keel’s song “melon” from his forthcoming album Ferals Welcome, which is scheduled to be released on June 5.  Ferals Welcome was produced by Benjamin Montaño and Gabriel Rhodes; and mastered by Chris Burns.

“melon” is Sean Keel on vocals; Ben Montaño on guitar, bass, and keyboards; and Gabe Rhodes on slide guitar.  Sean Keel’s are almost unbearably vulnerable, which adds an automatic and immediate credibility to anything he sings.  However, his songwriting is as authentic and breathtaking as you could ever hope to hear. “Billboards with bible verses and sweet corn ripe to burst – we kept in touch with walkie-talkies a hundred miles up to Milwaukee… Daisy was a gorgeous sort of crazy, she loved me and she loved Hank.”  Keel is undeniably a poet, and his music is beautiful. For fun, he calls his trio “Jane Fonda,” and this is certainly the best music we’ve ever heard from “Jane Fonda.”

The music for “melon” was written by Benjamin Montaño, my son in law. Ben has the magic touch: most anybody’s basic guitar riff, it sounds dorky, or dead, or just like a million others. Ben’s, invariably, are cool. Cool is the most important element in music, at least the kind of music I like, and Ben’s got it down cold. We’ve made three songs together– he does all the music and production, I do the words. When we do things together, him, me and my daughter Rose, we call ourselves “Jane Fonda”. I hope you’ll write that “melon” is, so far, the best thing ever from Jane Fonda. – Sean Keel
