Patrick McCormic “Blue Hydrangea”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Patrick McCormic’s song “Blue Hydrangea” (co-written with Sam Woods) from his recently released album Crisis of Confidence. The album was produced by Jim Reilley, mixed by Josh Hastick, and mastered by Alex McCullough.
Musicians playing in this video are Patrick McCormic on acoustic guitar and vocals; Cody Clayton on pedal steel; Ashton Smith on backing vocals; and Matt Crouse on drums.

As Patrick tells us, about the song, “This song was inspired by the old gardening tip of placing nails in the roots of hydrangeas to get them to change colors, which always seemed such a visceral thing to do to a plant. Flowers also carry so much symbolism. In particular, Hydrangeas can represent a lack of understanding or emotion. The gift of hydrangeas from the narrator to an unrequited love, the repeated failed attempts at connection, the deep pangs of rejection, it all seemed a perfect metaphor for me and my co-writer Sam Woods.”
This is a song of nostalgia, and rejection. Through the symbolism of the flower that has a figurative meaning for “unrequited love,” the song is a study in the emotions of a rejected human heart. This is quality songwriting from the heart and is a moving, authentic listen.
