Joyann Parker – “Roots”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Joyann Parker’s song “Roots,” the title track from her forthcoming album scheduled for release on September 8. The album was produced by Kevin Bowe (Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams) and Joyann Parker, with executive producer Mark Lamoine. It was engineered and mixed by Kevin Bowe at the Kill Room.
“Roots” is Joyann Parker on lead guitar and vocals; Mark Lamoine on slide guitar; Scott Graves on acoustic guitar; Tim Wick on keyboards; Chris Bates on bass; Bill Golden on drums; Patricia Lacey and Nester Theba on backing vocals.
This video was directed by Aglow Cinematics. Church Pews and a Les Paul set up a rockin’ blues vibe as we all take these moments to consider the power of what it means when we put our roots down and anchor ourselves in life, perhaps, despite serious struggle. Crank up the volume and feel the energy. Joyann’s daughter plays the role of her younger self, and passes the guitar to the more rooted and wiser version to Joyann. But her daughter of course also symbolizes the results of her rootedness in stability. It’s a striking sentiment.
“Roots” is an anthem of strength and also vulnerability, stemming from the realization that the mistakes and struggles of my youth have made me who I am today. The song is me declaring that I have been through the fire and come out the other side strong with the help of my community and faith, but with the realization that to continue growing, I have to keep those roots pushing down deep for stability and support. — Joyann Parker

“Roots” has been the go-to on my playlist since the first listening. Joyann Parker delivers a genuine, thoughtful, artistically diverse album chock full of songs about life, love, loss and re-discovery, all delivered in her trademark dynamic and magical vocals. Each song delights in crossing genres of Americana, Gospel, Soul, Bluegrass and even some Reggae! “Roots” is a sure fire powerhouse album and definitely one of the Best of 2023!
