Listen & Watch Song Premieres

Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Diane Hubka and the Sun Canyon Band’s song “Home,” from their forthcoming album You Never Can Tell, due to be released on January 28. The song will be released on December 8. You Never Can Tell was produced by Chad Watson, Rick Mayock and Diane Hubka; recorded, mixed and mastered by Frank Rosato at Woodcliff Studio, Los Angeles CA. Album art, photography and design were by Janis Wilkins at http://www.artGraphica.com.

“Home” is Diane Hubka on vocals and rhythm guitar; Rick Mayock on guitar; and Joe Caccavo on bass.  Rolling hills, faces, “and I wanna go home” are all hallmark images of Diane’s introspective folk style.  Her songwriting will soothe and calm your wayward jitters.

I wrote this song while living in the East Village of New York City and missing my family home in western Maryland. It evokes memories of making the eight hour drive through New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and eventually to the Appalachian Mountains of western PA and western MD. I would make the familiar route several times a year, in all seasons, all types of weather. Once I got to Bedford, PA, the landscape changed: with huge mountains on either side of the valley, traveling south on Rt. 220, as I made my way to Cumberland, MD, I would feel I was finally home.

The funny thing to me is that when I wrote the song, I was a full-on jazz singer/musician, performing in NYC clubs and very involved with the jazz community. I thought it was odd that the song I ended up writing was a folk song! I guess the simple fingerstyle guitar touches my heart, and evokes the sense of traveling back home.

There’s a spiritual layer to the song in lyrics like, “I close my eyes and I see,” connecting to an inner source of strength, and “the bluest blue I’ve ever seen above me” evokes the spiritual feeling I get when I’m in the remote and beautiful rural setting where I grew up. — Diane Hubka
