Americana Highways presents this premiere of Hibbs Family Band’s song “I Need You,” from their forthcoming album Two Mules, due to be released on August 28th to celebrate family member Aunt Clara’s birthday, who will turn 103 years old.
The album was produced by Tyler Key, recorded and mixed by Damon Moon at Standard Electric Recorders, and mastered by Joel Hatstat.
Musicians on “I Need You” are Rob Hibbs on vocals and acoustic guitar; Garrett Hibbs on backup vocals and bass; Judy Hibbs on piano; Henry Hibbs on fiddle; Tyler Key on pedal steel; and Ryan Moore on drums.
Hibbs Family Band really knows how to play together at an intuitive level like a good old-time hillbilly group, with the instruments rising and falling together. The playing itself is an analogy to family — members moving individually and in reaction and tandem. Check it out.
In an attempt to preserve and celebrate our family’s history, we document our stories through songs and sounds that have reverberated through our heritage. I wrote, “I Need You,” to highlight small moments that describe the relationship between my dad and his uncle, Paul. He lived on our family farm in the small town of Yarrow, Missouri. Uncle Paul was a tough man that never ran short on his zest for life and was said to be the town’s most eligible bachelor way into his 80’s. We can thank him for his humor, dedication to family and teaching our dad how to use the jaw harp, which I play in “I Need You.” — Rob Hibbs
