Jerid Reed Morris tells us about this song, “The narrative of ‘Might As Well Get Drunk’ aims to subvert the familiar honky-tonk fatalism its title implies. But unlike classics such as George Jones’s ‘If Drinkin’ Don’t Kill Me (Her Memory Will),’ Very Old Morris isn’t turning to the bottle… at least, not yet. He’s turning inward, to his own wry rationalization.
“With a gentle play-on-words and a sly grammatical shift–and a sizeable deliberation on supply-chain solidarity – Morris makes it clear that, if those ‘moonshiners and monks’ and ‘conglomerates and trusts’ are gonna bottle it, he might as well drink it. It’s merely the least he could do.”

This is a gentle nostalgic song in a confessional tale about addiction, sorrow and loss. The harmonies draw you in and the vocal crescendos keep you there, listening, feeling. Although it comes across as an ode to drinking, underneath it’s a song of painful truths.
