David Haerle “Carolyn”
Americana Highways presents the premiere of David Haerle’s song “Carolyn” from his forthcoming album, which is set for release on Edendale Records. It was mixed by Geoff Neal; engineered by John Patent (first engineer) and Geoff Neal (second engineer) with pre-production and additional tracking and editing by Jose Salazar and Brian Kabler. It was mastered by Whynot Jansveld.
“Carolyn” is David Haerle on lead vocals, lead guitar and electric rhythm guitars; Jon Lee Keenan on bass; Jeremy Castillo on electric guitars; Reade Pryor on drums; Alex Wand and Carson Cohen on backing vocals; and Jose Salazar on keyboards and percussion.
This video was directed by Kim Debut and edited by Michael Pottle with Bren Holmes as director of photography.
David tells us about the song: “This is a song that looks back upon a first romantic relationship, the joy and bliss of young love, and the deep feelings of loss and pain that ensue in the aftermath of a breakup. The events described in this song are based in part on my own first relationship, harking all the way back to my 7th and 8th grade school years, with some artistic license taken. Who can forget the moment they first learned that their feelings of romantic love for another were reciprocated? I wouldn’t trade the world for that memory.”
As director Kim Debus says, “David Haerle’s song Carolyn was immediately captivating in its sensual rhythm, expressive guitar solos, and haunting themes of lost love and the emotional and mental strain of letting go. The sultry, but pleading vocal tone and lyrical storytelling swept me into the concepts of using a desolate landscape as a backdrop for his aloneness and a large picture window through which he searches for any trace of her. I am hopeful that the song and video will remind us all of the
deep process of longing for another, the promise of correcting bad choices, and of the impact of great loss.
“In a society where lack of personal connection and disposable dating are plundering relationships, I wanted to illuminate how precious love is and of the often indelible consequences of our actions and words. I chose a barren black and white desert landscape and simple house to highlight his mental and physical solitude and regret. The hand held camera transports us a bit more deeply into his inner world as we follow and circle him revisiting their former home. We glimpse Carolyn against the landscape and in reflections. Is she really there or does she remain an incurable memory?”
Some videos are able to revisit memories, convey a sense of longing and possibility and still remain music videos. Not every song can withstand such a treatment, but David Hearle’s “Carolyn” can and does, and the result is moving. The sweetness, the wide open landscapes connoting possibility, the yearning, the memories, it’s all there: “would you try just once again, I’m waiting for you.”
