David G. Smith “Days of Babel”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of David G. Smith’s song “Days of Babel,”co-written with Tom Favreau, from his forthcoming album. It was mixed and produced by Neilson Hubbard; engineered by Dylan Alldrege at Skinny Elephant Recording in East Nashville; and mastered by Alex McCoullough. It was inspired by a May 2023 article in The Atlantic entitled, “Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid.” In the piece, author Jonathan Haidt employs the Tower of Babel as a metaphor for the extent of the fracturing among us.
“Days of Babel” is David G Smith on vocals and acoustic guitar; Lex Price on bass; Danny Mitchell on piano, melotron, Hammond B-3, and horn; Juan Solorzano on electric baritone guitar; Neilson Hubbard on drums and percussion; and Mia Winsinski on background vocals
As David tells us, “My co-writer Tom Favreau and I started talking about an article in the Atlantic that discussed social media and when it went from being actually ‘social’ to arguably antisocial. It started with the advent of the ‘share’ button back in 2012 or so, according to the article. Using that as a starting point, Tom and I came up with DOB as a quasi-description of the cultural fracturing that seems to be happening everywhere on this planet since then.”
This song sets up anticipation like a freight train coming from down the line, as it draws attention to the way we have become so deeply shattered and split apart with social media and modern technology. How will society fall? The song harnesses a driving, powerful energy as the message hits home.
