David G Smith – “Weight You Carry”
Americana Highways presents this premiere of David G Smith’s song “Weight You Carry,” from his forthcoming 11th album Witness Trees, which is due to be released on June 2nd. This song will be available on May 18th. Witness Trees was produced by Neilson Hubbard, engineered and mixed by Dylan Alldredge at Skinny Elephant Studios in Nashville. It was mastered by Jim DeMain at Yes Master.
“Weight You Carry” is David G Smith on vocals, piano, acoustic guitars, and resonator; Lex Price on bass; Dan Mitchell on piano, Hammond B-3, and background vocals; Juan Solorzano on steel and electric guitars; Neilson Hubbard on drums, percussion, and background vocals; and Alicia Michilli on background vocals. What a weight it is to carry in trying to fit into someone else’s expectations, and this song probes what happens when that weight is finally lifted. The song has a great groove and punctuated vocal delivery with airy backing vocals – bluesy and memorable. The video — a vignette of a hangman with something he’s carrying that needs to be buried, interspersed with David on a riverbank on resonator guitar – continues the shadowy feel.
This song was inspired by stories from the LGBTQ+ community who gave testimonials of what it was like to live in secrecy before coming out, facing each day feeling their lives were a sham. One person made the comment, ‘You don’t know the weight you carry around, until you come to terms.’ Inspired by a group of people that are challenged every day…but written in such a way to be applicable to anyone who feels like they are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. – David G Smith
