Rees Shad — “Nobody Said”

Americana Highways presents this video premiere of Rees Shad’s song “Nobody Said,” from his recently released album Tattletale.

“Nobody Said” is Rees Shad on guitar, vocals and piano; Tony Aiello on reeds; Jeff Link on upright and electric bass; and Tom Major on drums.  Gentle and thought-provoking piano chords create a suspenseful build-up, and “nobody said the spring was easy…” is a hazy, jazz -infused relaxed accounting of those times that life just isn’t easy.

“Nobody Said” is a song that I wrote during one of those wonderfully unpredictable springs that New England can experience. I was getting my piano tuned by my old friend Sal Maneri, and as he entered the house, I asked him how he was doing. He responded in his fantastically gruff New York accent “Well… you know… nobody said Spring was easy!” I told him then and there that I was gonna use the line in a song, and the next time he came for a tuning I sat down at the end of the session and played him the song. He was touched. He is a great jazz singer, and we ran through the number together as a duet a few times before he left that day. This is the only cowrite on the new album. — Rees Shad
