Sawyer Fredericks

REVIEW: Sawyer Fredericks “The Golden Tree”

Reviews

Sawyer Fredericks has a new 4-song EP, The Golden Tree, which was produced by Sawyer; recorded and mixed by Ariel Shafir and mastered by Steven Fallone. Album art and graphics were done by Nina Pfeiffer.

Musicians on the EP are Sawyer on vocals and acoustic guitar;  Jerome Goodman on dobro; Gannon Ferrell on bass; Chris Thomas on drums and percussion;  Sam Buist on violin and backing vocals; Katie Larson on cello and backing vocals.   (Sav Buist and Katie Larson appear courtesy of The Accidentals.)

The title track is a bit of a surprise for those used to Sawyer’s eclectic and beautiful syncopated singing style as it’s morphed into a more traditional old-timey country arrangement, and we are treated to a fuller range of Sawyer’s talent.  “Lonely Bear” is a confessional song, about that best friend, or that part of ourselves that comforts us when we’re most alone and despondent. “He thinks love is for the bees” and “nothing scares my lonely bear, when he’s lost he’s unaware.”

“Farm Song” is a song of rebuilding an old farmhouse, as we rebuild our injured selves along with it, hushed and soulful with Fredericks’ rich and nimble vibrato vocals soothing and then adeptly spiking way up high to the highest heights.  “So Smooth” is another lonesome song, with him cajoling “no more crying for the stars to align,” and Sawyer sings oh so smoothly over a loping rhythm, and you’ll shed a tear anyway.

Sawyer Fredericks is leveling up, branching out and better than ever here.  Sorrowful and real, with a timelessness amidst his unique, healing, soulful sound.
