The Company Stores — “A New Leaf”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of The Company Stores’ song “A New Leaf,” from their forthcoming album, The Family Album, due to be available on September 23. The album was produced by Robert Mercurio with the instruments recorded at Echo Mountain Recording Studio in Asheville, NC and engineering by Julian Dreyer. The vocals were recorded at Galactic’s Recording Studio in New Orleans with Robert Mercurio engineering.  The album was mixed by Mikael “Count” Eldridge (Trombone Shorty, The Revivalists), with album artwork by Chris Woodall.

“A New Leaf” is Ileana Ille on vocals; Michael Micucci on bass; Joseph Cevallos on electric violin and trumpet; Matthew Marks on guitar; Matthew Jackfert on keys, trombone, organ, and xylophone; John Query on drums; and special guest Jodi Hall on background vocals.

There’s no voice that expresses bluesy weariness quite like Jodi Hall, and it’s supported to the max here with a whirling musical milieu by The Company Stores.  Complete with horns to punctuate the high points. “Damn, not again.”

“A New Leaf” is about the promises we tell ourselves during the low points of our lives, and then how we justify it when we break those promises. The lyrics, “Start fresh tomorrow, but tonight my friend… burning both ends,’ kind of sum it up. We wanted the chorus to read like a “cheers” and for it to sing like a pub song.” —Matt Marks, lyricist, guitar

“A New Leaf” is a personal favorite of mine. I thought they did a great job with the lyrics and the melody – I’m super happy with the way this one turned out.” —Producer Robert Mercurio
