Marks’ interpretation of “Darlin’ Cory” is as fresh as it is timeless. Through a soulful vocal delivery and distinctive banjo frailing, Marks demonstrates why their artistry has captivated legions of fans via online virtual performances. The album Grace is set to feature a mixture of traditional and original tunes arranged by Marks. This inaugural single from the upcoming album exemplifies an artist carrying the past forward and demonstrates how the narrative contained within is still relevant today.
“Darlin’ Cory” is a traditional tune that tells the story of a moonshining, brothel-running, banjo-playing, mountain woman who meets her end at the hands of the feds trying to shut her business down. Seems the government has always been afraid of independent, powerful women. I picked this tune up from recordings by Pete and Mike Seeger. I’d sing it a cappella if the banjo part wasn’t so damn fun to play. – Charlie Marks
