EP Premiere: Cliffs & Caves’ “Capsize”

Listen & Watch Song Premieres
Americana Highways brings you this premiere of the EP Capsize by the Texas mother-daughter duo Lindsey and Claire Justice, produced by Chris Jacobie (Penny and Sparrow, Jarrod Dickenson, Duncan Fellows). The album features both Justices on vocals, with Ward Williams on cello, and Michael Bellar on piano and keys. On the song “Capsize” it’s Jacob Hildebrand on guitar and Fred Mandujano on drums; on all other songs it’s JP Ruggieri on guitars and Dylan Wissing on drums.  The album was engineered by Mitchell Webb, and mixed and mastered by Chris Bethea at Muscle Shoals Mastering.
There’s foreboding in the title track, with music and lyrical tension that breaks with “I’m about to capsize, I’m going down.”  On “Good-bye For Good” we hear a mournful letting-go over shuffly rhythms and sustained keys while the vocals virtually caress our tears away.  “Sea Glass” features cello and thoughtful dreamy pleading vocals, and “Right Side” brings a ray of sunshine and hope to the mix.  Overall the songs will hit you emotionally and the EP creates a sense of suspense at those things in life that are often unresolved.
“Capsize” is the most transparent and honest music that Claire and I have made together. Once we let go of all the parameters we’d previously thought we should fall within as a mother/daughter duo, and allowed ourselves to simply enjoy making the art we wanted to make- we were free for the words spill out about whatever subjects we were drawn to, and that’s when Capsize truly came together as a project. We’re much more exposed emotionally and sonically with this new EP -and beyond grateful for our producer Chris Jacobie whose laser vision for where a song should land helped us clear the noise and focus our true sound. We’re ecstatic to finally share this sophomore release.” — Lindsey
