Jayce Turley – “Broke Down”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Jayce Turley’s song “Broke Down,” the title track from his forthcoming album, due to be released on May 24 via Rock Ridge Music. Broke Down was produced, mixed, engineered, and mastered by Jason Groves of Sneak Attack Studio in Lexington, Kentucky.

“Broke Down” is Jayce Turley on lead vocals and acoustic guitar; Dale Blankenship on electric guitar; Maclean James on keys; Cameron Anthony Miller on drums; Ella Webster on fiddle; Logan Henry on pedal steel; and Patrick Turley on bass.

We had a chance to sit down with Jayce Turley to chat about the song.  The premiere appears just beneath the interview.

Americana Highways: Can you tell us what inspired you to write this song and what it’s about?

Jayce Turley: This song is about the real story of a night my band and I broke down in Circleville, Ohio on the way home from a gig in Johnstown, Ohio. It’s also sort of a play on how life can be sometimes, or always, running behind.

AH: What kind of a vibe were you going for on this song? How does the final version differ from what you imagined it might be before you went into the studio?

JT: I had originally intended to record this with a more bluegrassy feel. I think it came out more funky and country, and it turned out perfect!

AH: What do you hope listeners get from hearing the song?

JT: I hope a lot of people can relate to this kind of situation and the feeling of running behind and breaking down.

AH: Have you played this song live? If so, what kind of reaction has the song gotten from audiences?

JT: A lot of people love the story behind this song. I think when a song has a good story behind it, it really helps the audience to connect to it and feel like they are in the story.

AH: How does this song fit in among the others on the album? How is it similar and/or how does it stand out as different?

JT: A goal I had with this record was to try to experiment with a variety of different sounds. This song and another song on the album hit the country aspect of my music the heaviest.

AH: What made you name the album, which comes out later this week, after this song?

JT: The title of this song really connects an aspect of a few songs on the record.

AH: What’s next for Jayce Turley?

JT: My plan this summer is to play as many live shows as I can, travel as much as possible, and write plenty of new songs. I plan to hit the studio this fall and hopefully have another album out next summer.

With an alluring intro, this song draws you in with a variety of instruments calling in turn.  Jayce Turley has the comforting vocal style of a Tyler Childers, and a tale of a breakdown: “I’m too down to lose and trying not to lose my mind, what do I do now?” Your head will be bobbing and you’ll be reaching for the volume button to turn it up!
