JD Hinton – “When You Dance”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of JD Hinton’ song “When You Dance” from his forthcoming EP Five Smooth Stones, which is slated for release in June.  When You Dance was produced by Justin Glaco, mixed by Ryan Lipman and mastered by Pete Lyman of Infrasonic Sound.

“When You Dance” is JD Hinton on vocals and background vocals; Drew Taubenfeld on guitar; Kenny Wild on bass; and Rob Humphreys on drums and percussion, with other instruments and backing vocals by Justin Glasco.

This is a down low song about the possibility of love, and JD washes over you like a close disciple of Leonard Cohen with his low vocals and the honest phrasing and delivery: “I’d love to have the chance to see you when you dance.” But JD also has a style all his own. Give it a listen and open yourself to the possibility of sharing that slow dance.

“When You Dance” is a quasi fairy tale. It starts “Once upon a while… ” Some of it is true or based on a real experience we’ve all had in some way. I met a Louisiana girl at a Texas party years ago. I can still see her face. I still remember the song playing on the car radio while we realized she was going home the next day. I thought somehow I would see her again. “Are you sure that you can’t stay? Are you coming back this way?” I did not see her again. Two months later I moved to California, and I’m sure she moved on, too. Over the years, I wanted to say I hope your life turns out great. I’d love to see you when you come into your own. When you dance. This song is an “end of summer” story… when you meet someone and the vacations over… when it’s back to school or back to work, but you remember. – JD Hinton
