JP Harris “Hang Me”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of JP Harris’ version of the traditional song “Hang Me,” from his forthcoming album Shaving A Dead Man, set for release on October 23. The album was produced, engineered, and mixed by Chance McCoy at Hunter Springs Studio in Greenville WV, and mastered by John Baldwin at Infrasonic in Nashville. This album is a stripped down fiddle and banjo treatment of mostly traditional songs but just the duo: JP and Chance.
“Hang Me” is JP Harris on banjo and lead vocals, and Chance McCoy on fiddle and harmony vocals.
As JP Harris tells us about the performance of this song, “I’ve no way to be certain where I first heard and learned this tune, other than it being a ubiquitous late-night classic at fiddler’s conventions and rowdy old time jams. Old-time music has been a baseline for me, and I think in getting a little older, a little more comfortable with myself and trusting my intuitions a little more, I’ve realized that one thing that’s never changed in the tumult of launching and trying to build and maintain a music career all these years, the one consistent love and lover that I’ve had has been the old-time community.”
The two men playing high on a mountain top as the wind ruffles their clothes is as timeless and classic as the song. The rich blend of banjo and fiddle are spine tinglingly good.
