Kate Waters “Words”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Kate Waters song “Words” from her forthcoming album Some Comfort. The album was recorded at Red Tree Recording Studio in Magnolia, Texas;
engineered by Jeffery Armstreet; mixed and mastered by Ty Robins with production support by Jay Snider and Ty Robins. Executive producer for Some Comfort was Paul Litvak.
Musicians on “Words” are Kate Waters on piano, acoustic guitar, and vocals; Gus Alvarado on drums and percussion; Jeff Duncan on fiddle; Andrew Gordon on upright bass; Matt Kidd on guitars; and Russ Willis on banjo, keys, mandolin, and pedal steel.
As Kate says about the song “This is the oldest song on the record, from my earliest stages of songwriting as an adult. I was wrestling with why I felt intimidated by writing lyrics, like words couldn’t ever fully capture what I wanted to say. I mean, that’s why I’m a musician, truly.
“The sentiment still holds true—words can do a lot, but they also fail a lot of the time. We see it so much these days, politically speaking—people talking past each other and never truly understanding one another. I’m a music therapist, and as someone who’s worked professionally with nonspeaking people for most of my professional life, I know how important it is to tune into other aspects of communication and human connection.”
It’s apt that Kate is named “Waters” as her vocals sound like the cascade of a gentle waterfall. This is a song of struggle, born of observations of nonverbal communication, and it hits deep. “But he’ll never know the truth, all my fears and all my praise. ‘Cause i can’t sing my heart out when I don’t have the words to say.”
