Holly tells us of the song’s unique circumstances: “This song was written on the island of Crete at a big turning point in my life. In 2023, I went to live there for a month as I was selling my house in England. The plan was to free myself up financially so I could return to Nashville to mix and release my album, “Sweet Decline,” which I’d started the year before. And, also, I was hoping to reconcile with my ex, there. We’d met the year before and had a whirlwind romance, but it’d all gone pear-shaped long-distance. I was hoping to salvage it. And, if both didn’t work out, then start a new life somewhere else.

“So, I took a gamble and put my house up for sale. I’d just moved out, put everything in storage, and was days off catching a flight to Nashville when the buyer stalled. I was homeless and had to think on my feet of a temporary place to go. I’d been to Crete years before, and it’s cheaper than England. And it’s a magical place. It’s where Joni Mitchell escaped to once. So, I bought a ticket and went. But soon after arriving, I found out my American love had moved on. I was devastated. Then a couple of days later, when I was driving, processing it all, I gave out a huge sigh – and started singing a note. Then it became more notes, and soon it became a howling lament of a song about love, illusion, and redemption. The message to it, I suppose, is that even if great loves sometimes turn out to be like the moon, and a projection of our love we give out, then that makes us all suns. And that’s something to rejoice in. I love singing it.”

Probing the pain of lost love and juxtaposing that with the deep beauty of nature and honest empowerment, this song is moving and cathartic. The video catches the darkness of the soul that the song explores. “You’re the moon / You’re a mystery / Playing games / Show me what I want to see / But your love’s illusionary / Wax and wane / You’ll be the death of me. / You’re the moon / But I’m the sun.”
