Tim Grimm – “Up in the Attic”
Americana Highways is hosting this video premiere of Tim Grimm’s song “Up in the Attic” from his forthcoming album Bones of Trees. Bones of Trees was produced by Tim Grimm, recorded and engineered by Jono Manson, and mastered by David Glasser of Airshow Mastering.
“Up in the Attic” is Tim Grimm on vocals and guitar; Sergio Webb on electric guitar; and Beth Malcolm on vocals. This is a nostalgic song with acoustic guitars and touches of electric guitar weaving in and out of the vulnerable vocals, and then the harmony vocals are breathless and airy in a way that underscores the reflective quality of the song. Wooden boxes, old photos, broken clocks, paintings, it’s images of going through an attic, and metaphors for going through memories, and the result is quite beautiful.
A woman with a hole in her wings. A father with the world in a bottle on his old nightstand.
Questions don’t always need answers. Much in life is unresolved. Daughters…. Angels. Fathers…. God ? Breath and breathing…Timeless images of mythic proportions- exploring captivity, freedom, and the internal and literal spaces we inhabit.
This is an unusual song for me. I tend to write from experience, and the vast majority of my songs are first person narratives, or, fact-based stories -contemporary or past- that resonate with me. This one comes strictly from the imagination. The characters- “Angel” and “Her Father” rise from an exercise of the mind— exploring writing a song about an Angel. I’m still an observer in the song, but, it’s in a completely fictional universe. Listeners will (and have) draw(n) all kinds of conclusions…. And that’s a good thing! – Tim Grimm
