Kate McDonnell – “Step Right Up”
Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Kate McDonnell’s song “Step Right Up” from her forthcoming album Trapeze, which is set for release this fall. The album was produced by Jimi Woodul at Jimi W. Studios; mixed by Andrew Oedel of Ghost Hit Recording; and mastered by Chris Muth of Taloowa Mastering.
“Step Right Up” is Kate McDonnell on acoustic guitar and vocals; Sam Zucchini on drums; James Gascoyne on bass; and Jimi Woodul on guitars, vocals, sonic layers, midi effects, and aux. percussion.
Tackling controversial and difficult topics is never completely pleasant, of course, but Kate confronts one of the most insidious here, recounting stories of kids who have been victims of gun violence. Their number is staggering, and the song is compelling. “Step right up, take a bow, you’re the next ‘what-might-have-been.’ When will we ever learn?” “All he wanted when he got older was to play football… talking smack was his downfall…” The song is arranged with a direct cadence that supports the requisite dissonance as you listen … and cringe.
A salient, urgent message to the listener to consider the costly pervading gun-violence culture in America – Kate McDonnell
