Juliette Stewart – “Talking to the River”
Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Juliette Stewart’s song “Talking to the River” from her forthcoming album, which is due to be available later this year. The album was produced by Juliette along with producer and engineer Thom Panunzio (Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks). It was mixed and mastered by Thom Panuzio alongside Ken Dahl. Panunzio, for reference, was executive Vice President of UMG, and head of A&R for Interscope/Geffen/A&M. The music was recorded at Beaird Music Group in Nashville, with additional recording at strings recorded at Wildwood Recording Studios in Brooklyn, NY. Cover artwork was created by Spencer Robens Design, with photography by Brandon Keys.
“Talking to the River” was written by Juliette Stewart and is Juliette on vocals; Pat McGrath on guitar and mandolin; Eli Beaird (ACM Bass Player of the Year Nominee) on bass; Troy Lancaster on piano; Michael McPherson on drums; Kelly Halloran on violin and string arrangements.
Sometimes the pain of losing someone or being rejected is overwhelmingly hurtful, a feeling which is conveyed by the very essence of Juliette Stewart’s hearty vocal tones: “I caught myself talking to the river thinking it was you.” Buildup with strings makes for a great crescendo as our feelings ultimately wash over us in the flow of sorrow. But “Talking to the River” is also about mustering up internal resolve, and being able to move on once again when it’s over. All done beautifully.
“Talking To The River” is a confessional about the universal experience we all share of getting lost in playing out difficult conversations we wish we could have out loud in our heads instead, until we’re jerked out of the fantasy. Even more so, it is an anthem for everyone who aches with the all-too-human longing we share for validation. It is meant to comfort those grieving when their call for acceptance isn’t answered, to know they’re never alone. The song examines the complexities of relationships and our yearning within them to be wholly loved, and the fight to believe we are inherently whole whether we receive that or not. -Juliette Stewart
