Old Heavy Hands – Small Fires

Old Heavy Hands is releasing a new album, Small Fires, this week.  Small Fires was produced by Danny Fonorow and Old Heavy Hands; engineered by Mitch Easter (Wilco, Drive-By Truckers), Ted Comberford and Benjy Johnson; mixed by Henry Lunetta (Machine Gun Kelly) and mastered by Greg Calbi and Steve Fallone.

Hailing from the Greensboro North Carolina, this edgy alt-rock band launches the album with the high energy “Runaround” – “heard you were leaving town with some other boy” and you’ll get a slight feel of the old alt rock bands like Smash Mouth.

But “Between You and Me” turns our attention to more of a ballad – an ode to a hangout stoned on a couch, and escaping by the skin of our teeth.  “Old Demons” summons more 90s rock party reminiscence and then driving old demons down into the dirt.

“All the Time in the World” brings things down to a more reflective regretful song, “if you make the promised land before I can, please send me that brochure.”  It’s a song of weariness and consideration of mortality in the midst of being tired.  “Coming Down” sets up some bouncy guitar to draw you in, “there ain’t to reason to wake up when you can’t sleep, there’s mounds of doubts still weighing on me.”

Their sound is driving alt rock musicianship and rock energy that’s gotten mixed up with a youthful heartland rock.  Find the music here: https://oldheavyhands.bandcamp.com/album/small-fires-4

Musicians on the album are Nathan James Hall (vocals, guitar), Larry Wayne Slaton (vocals, guitar, keys) David Self (lead guitar, vocals),  Josh Coe (bass, mandolin) and John Chester (drums and percussion).  Additional musicans are Laura Murphy, Carri Smithey, and Josh King on backing vocals, and Casey Cranford and Eli Fribush on saxophones, Zac Lee on trumpet, and Justin Gerringer on trombone.
