Balsam Range – “Two Lane Highway”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Balsam Range’s song “Two Lane Highway,” from their forthcoming album Kinetic Tone, due to be available on December 1. Kinetic Tone was produced by Balsam Range, recorded by Scott Barnett at Crossroads Studios; mixed by: Scott Barnett and Clay Miller and mastered by Clay Miller with additional post production by Scott Barnett and Jeff Collins and Dolby Atmos mix by Scott Barnett.
“Two Lane Highway” is Tim Surrett on bass; Caleb Smith on acoustic guitar and vocals; Alan Bibey on mandolin and vocals; Buddy Melton on fiddle and vocals; and Marc Pruett on banjo.
There’s not much more immediately uplifting in the world than the sound of strong fiddle followed by mandolin and banjo like this, and Balsam Range’s vocals harmonize closely leaving you with optimistic chills, and then “nothing in this world like the freedom of the road / two lane highway take me where I want to go.” It’s a winner.
I grew up in a small town in Stokes County, North Carolina, and it’s a two-lane highway to anywhere you go. I was driving out west a couple years ago and had to detour off the interstate onto some two-lane highway, and it felt like home to me. The first few lines of this song came to me then, and I wrote a good bit of it before asking my old friend, Wayne Winkle, if he would help me finish it. He was kind enough to accept. It brings back happy thoughts of home to me, and I hope it’ll do the same for folks that hear it. – Alan Bibey
