Highway Wolf – “Back in the High Life Again”
Americana Highways presents this premiere of Highway Wolf’s version of “Back in the High Life Again” (written by Steve Winwood and Will Jennings), from his forthcoming album Purdie’s Dream – a collection of cover songs. The album was produced by Tal Morris and Amber Morris with executive producer (and band frontman) Mick Hellman (Wreckless Strangers).
“Back in the High Life Again” is Mick Hellman on lead vocals and drums; Austin de Lone on Hammond organ; Barbara Higbie on mandolin; Tal Morris on electric guitar, acoustic guitar and percussion; Dave Zirbel on pedal steel guitar; Joshua Zucker on electric upright bass; Amber Morris on backing vocals; Gabriella de la Cruz on backing vocals; and Laurel Hellman on backing vocals.
This is the way cover songs ought to be. A different and unique interpretation of the beloved song that was made popular in Steve Winwood’s immortalized version. Pedal steel and rhythmic banjo really create a different groove from the original, while staying true to quality music principles, with ethereal harmonies, plucked mandolin and a Tulsa-blend style.
My album, Purdie’s Dream, out soon, kicks off with “Back in The High Life Again.” It serves to represent Highway Wolf’s memories of happy times.
Sometimes we get to travel back to a shinier, brighter part of our lives and re-make ties that got frayed or broken. In our version of this song, we gave it a J. J. Cale-type feel, and we hope it will appeal to Americana Highways fans! Please enjoy this exclusive first look from Highway Wolf. – Mick Hellman
