Chris Jones and the Night Drivers – “Those Gambler’s Blues”
Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Chris Jones and the Night Driver’s version of “Those Gambler’s Blues” (Jimmie Rodgers). This song will appear on their upcoming release Pages In Your Hand. This record was produced by Chris Jones; recorded, mixed and mastered by Scott Barnett at Crossroads Studios in Arden, NC. (Additional post production was by Scott Barnett and Jeff Collins at Crossroads Studios.)
“Those Gambler’s Blues” is Chris on acoustic guitar; Marshall Wilborn on bass; Mark Stoffel on mandolin; and Grace van’t Hof on banjo and lead vocals. Intriguing dark vocals by Grace van’t Hof drape a somber pall of black haze over “Those Gambler’s Blues” as the guitar and banjo strum a loping beat for this timeless song of a funeral send-off to an old gal of the narrator’s. Nicely done.
Grace sings lead on ‘Those Gambler’s Blues,” a Jimmie Rodgers song, which is significant because it marks the first time someone besides me has been singing lead on one of our recordings. I’ve always loved the song and when Grace joined the band, I was very happy to discover our mutual love of the music of the Singing Brakeman. – Chris Jones
