C. Daniel Boling & Tom Paxton – “Old Friends”

Americana Highways brings you this premiere of C. Daniel Boling & Tom Paxton’s song “Old Friends,” from Boling’s forthcoming album New Old Friends, which consists of 15 songs co-written with Paxton.  The album was engineered and mixed by Jono Manson, The Kitchen Sink Recording Studio in Santa Fe; with additional recording by Kelly Mulhollan at Termite Tracks Studio in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It was co-produced by Jono Manson and C. Daniel Boling. Mastering was courtesy of David Glasser at AirShow in Boulder.

“Old Friends” is C. Daniel Boling on guitar, lead vocal, and supporting vocals; Tom Paxton  on supporting vocal; and Kelly Mulhollan on mandolin and upright bass.

The video was edited and produced by C. Daniel. Raw video footage and cinematography was by Jono Manson & C. Daniel Boling, Tim McMullen and Kelly Mulhollan. The video showcases scenes from three states – New Mexico, Arkansas, and a live performance in Colorado.  The seasoned mandolin, the old time recording, lyrics to pay homage to old friends with relatable scenes from various stages in life, and the honest vocals blend together in a pretty, memorable song.  “Old friends don’t fade away.”

When Tom and I began writing together in the summer of 2022, ‘Old Friends’ was our very first song. Dozens more have followed, but this song remains a favorite and we both play it in our concerts. For this video I started with the album track and layered footage from three States: me tracking guitar and vocals at Jono Manson’s Kitchen Sink Studio in Santa Fe, NM; Kelly Mulhollan’s mandolin and bass from Termite Tracks Studio in Fayetteville, AR; and a lovely outdoor concert I played in July, 2023 with Tom Paxton and Jackson Emmer in an aspen grove on Four Mile Creek near Glenwood Springs, CO. I’ve known Tom’s music all my life, and we had met several times since I started touring years ago, but we only became close quite recently, so Tom and I like to say that we’re not “Old Friends” — we’re “New Old Friends.” – C. Daniel Boling
