Americana Highways presents this premiere of Kendall Jane Meade and Kris Gruen’s song “Heaven on a Car Ride.” It was produced by Charles Newman and recorded at Cottage Sounds in Los Angeles, CA with additional recording at The Green Room in East Montpelier, VT.
“Heaven on a Car Ride” is Kendall Jane Meade and Kris Gruen (songwriters) on vocals; Kris Gruen on guitar; Charles Newman on organ and marxaphone; Colin McCaffery on mandolin, banjo and upright bass; Jake Pinto on organ and Butch Norton on drums. Both Meade and Gruen sing to your soul in turns like they each can touch a secret we didn’t realize we all share. A hushed arrangement and “singing from the passenger side, no matter where we are, we’re gonna make it home” is a lovely song to swing in your hammock by. Gentle dashes of banjo add the perfect gentle touch to it all.
The video with its dreamlike imagery of the songwriters playing and lots of nostalgic throwback road scenes was directed by Susan Rivas; edited by Henry Beguiristain; with special thanks to Drew Wheeler, Bob Gruen, and Jane Meade.
It’s always a little awkward to write when you don’t know each other well. So when Kris asked me if I had any ideas for us to jam on, I nervously and quietly played him an unfinished version of “Heaven on A Car Ride,” which I had written the night before during a bout of full moon insomnia. He stopped me after the 2nd verse, saying ‘Wait, that’s my story. You’re singing my story.’ And that’s when we knew we had to keep working on it, as it was likely someone else’s story as well. – Kendall Jane Meade
