Patterson Barrett – “I’m Pretending”

Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Patterson Barrett’s song “I’m Pretending,” written by Patterson’s former bandmates Julie and Buddy Miller, and featuring Buddy Miller on backing vocals.  This song is part of Patterson’s self-produced forthcoming album I Just Can’t Call It Quits.

“I’m Pretending” is Patterson Barrett on acoustic guitar, pedal steel guitar, piano, bass, drums, and vocals; Buddy Miller on harmony vocals; Cam King on electric guitar; and Gene Elders on fiddle. This song sets up with a hop, skip, and a jump, and then it’s a tongue in cheek country waltz, rocking you gently while it recounts what happens when you have to pretend when you really should forget.

During the lockdown, I just started singing songs I liked, to amuse myself. I became fond of this one, written by my longtime friends and former bandmates Buddy and Julie, and then, again, because it’s fun to do, I recorded it. That’s pretty much how the entire record came about. — Patterson Barrett
