Futurebirds — Blooming’ Too
Futurebirds is a band whose sound is made for Red Rocks. Their cosmically swirly jam rock with a healthy dose of Southern artistry and pedal steel makes it a bit surprising that the Georgia-based boys are only now (in October) making their first appearance at the world’s best amphitheatre, but they’re coming with an added punch – a second EP with My Morning Jacket’s guitarist/producer Carl Broemel. Bloomin’ Too distills all of Futurebirds’ best instincts down to a tight six songs and serves as an excellent primer for folks heading to see the band with Caamp.
Bloomin’ Too’s first song, “Buffet Days,” is a piano-led wander that embraces anxiety – “Let that brain train steamroll/Right on through your mind” – as a part of life, with Kiffy Myers’ pedal steel helping to smooth the ride. Lead single “Sinz & Frenz” is the most traditionally Southern tune on the record, with twin guitar solos and deep-friend honesty – “I wanna take all of my sins and put ‘em on display for the world to see.”
Singer/guitarist/founding member Daniel Womack commented how quickly Bloomin’ Too was “cranked out” in the studio, due to the kinship amd musical shorthand shared between the band and Broemel, and that may be why this EP is such an excellent representation of the band’s live presence. “Easier Said” is an acoustic-paced look at altered states – “Everything sounds better when you’re feeling good.” “The Creeper,” belying its title, is a sweet, steel-soaked reminiscence – “I was creepin’ through some memories of you smilin’ at me” – that sparkles from the harmonies of the band’s three singer-songwriters (Womack, Carter King and Thomas Johnson). And the slow cosmic jam between “St. Teresa” and “Monteagle” is what warm summer nights outdoors are meant for, whether you’re on The Rocks or in your own backyard.
Song I Can’t Wait to Hear Live: “Monteagle” – A sizable jam at the end to make the evening stretch on just a bit longer.
Futurebirds are Carter King (vocals, guitar), Daniel Womack (vocals, guitar), Thomas Johnson (vocals, guitar), Brannen Miles (bass), Kiffy Myers (pedal steel), Spencer Thomas (keyboards) and Tom Myers (drums) and are joined by guitarist/producer Carl Broemel.
