Americana Highways brings you this video premiere of Will Overman’s song “Dotted Line,” the title track from his forthcoming EP due to be released on November 3. The EP was mixed by Gabe Rabben; engineered and produced by Sam Wilson and Gabe Rabben at Fatback Sounds in Nashville; with mastering by Jim Demain. The song was written by Will Overman and Chris Coleman.
“Dotted Line” is Will Overman on vocals and acoustic guitar; Sam Wilson on acoustic and electric guitars; Evan Hunsberger on drums, percussion, and backing vocals; Ryan Lee on bass and backing vocals; and Carson Cody on piano and Hammond B3. “Rollin’ down easy, it don’t matter what highway,” and “let the road baptize your soul,” are lines from the perfect roadtrip song. Overman references John Prine, but we hear Jim Croce in the music. Regardless of what ghosts you may hear haunting the music, Will Overman offers us all an emotionally resonant country song of roadtrip redemption. “Give me that dotted line, I’m ready to go.”
Back in quarantine I found myself on a country road stuck behind a car going way too slow, and saying to myself, “Just give me that dotted line….”. It got me thinking about everything we were trying to move past at the time: isolation, fear, the unknown. Although I wrote “Dotted Line” during a different phase of life, I’ve found that is applies today just as much as it did back then. We’re always trying to move forward, and this song reminds to run towards something, rather than away. — Will Overman
