REVIEW: Ryan Culwell “Run Like A Bull”

Reviews

Ryan Culwell has a new album out, Run Like a Bull.  The record was produced by Neilson Hubbard, engineered by Dylan Alldredge; recorded at Skinny Elephant Recording; mastered by Jim DeMain at Yes Master Studios and mastered for vinyl by John Golden at Golden Mastering.

“All I Got” showcases Culwell’s vocals (that’ll remind you of Tyler Childers and Drayton Farley) in a song that’s aimed at touching your heart and hits the target deeply. “If the Lord knew all the shit I done … I’ll give it one more try.”

“Wild Sometimes” is the heart and soul of the album: beautiful lines like the way he got found in church by “a strawberry blonde with grape juice on her lips,” and a song about growing up, and getting a little wild sometimes. As the ending itself goes wild with Culwell’s energy, we can relate.

“This Town” features Caroline Spence on harmony vocals in a song about being broke and the tolls we pay — literal and figurative.

Album closer “Don’t Let Go” is just as strong as the first songs of the album.  It asks “do you really think these walls keep us safe? set me free from all this freedom…  crush my body and save my soul … I don’t want to run anymore.”  “You remember that Nova I kept up on blocks?”

Check out the whole album and decide about the other tracks too.

It’s raw songwriting about the deeply sorrowful reality of life’s struggles.  Ryan Culwell has emerged here very clearly as a superb songwriter and there ought to be tens of thousands of fans lining up to every one of his shows.  Sooner rather than later.  In the meantime, we’ve already heard he’s heading up some of the top albums of the year lists.

Musicians on Run Like a Bull are Ryan Culwell on acoustic guitar and vocals; Neilson Hubbard on percussion, drums, synth, piano, and vocals; Kris Donegan on electric and acoustic guitars and bass; Juan Solorzano on pedal steel, lap steel, electric guitar, synth, and bass; Will Kimbrough on electric guitar; and Betsy Philips, Natalie Schlabs, and Caroline Spence on vocals.
