Tray Wellington — “Crooked Mind”

Americana Highways presents this premiere of Tray Wellington’s song “Crooked Mind,” from his forthcoming album Black Banjo. The album was produced by Jon Weisberger; engineered by Clay Miller of Crossroads Studios, in Arden, NC.  Photography for the album was courtesy of Rob Laughter and Dan Boner, with graphic artist by McKenna Greene.

“Crooked Mind” is Tray Wellington on banjo; Avery Merritt on fiddle; Jon Stickley on guitar; Kevin Kehrberg on bass; and Wayne Benson on mandolin.

“Crooked Mind” has a nice long banjo intro that conjures wild dance patterns, and then the fiddle comes in and it’s pure excitement, and then it’s the lovely mandolin’s turn to enter the mix. Swing your partner, back-and-forth they go, on this lively instrumental groove.

“Crooked Mind” is my take on writing a tune that is catchy yet also original and unique. I love old time and knew somewhere on the album I wanted to hear a burner with an old time groove to it that also gives people the space to move creatively. — Tray Wellington
