Fellow Pynins – “Silver Dagger”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Fellow Pynins’ version of the traditional song “Silver Dagger” from their forthcoming album Lady Mondegreen.  Lady Mondegreen was produced by the Fellow Pynins, mixed by Philip Weinrobe and mastered by Taylor Deupree of 12k Mastering.  The album will be available on May 20.

Musicians playing on the song are Dani Aubert on banjo, bouzouki, and vocals; and  Ian George on guitars, mandolin, piano, and vocals; and Ted Olsen on bass.  The video was created by Jayden Becker https://www.jaydenbecker.com/.

This is a chilling traditional song of a tormented relationship passed down to the daughter who is held captive, violently, from love.  The distorted footage of the video shows scenes that would be beautiful but have a shrouded layer that the viewer can’t quite make out, much like the shrouded past that overshadows the girl’s dreams — and those of her betrothed.  All of this shaded intent is drawn out fully in the Fellow Pynins’ version of this song, with hollow echoes and the miserable little tale in flinty harmonies.  Well done.

The imagery of ‘Silver Dagger” is that of a jaded mother who protects a daughter from the suitors who vie for her attention—merges with the memories of how we crafted our version in muggy Minneapolis and in Oregon, by a trickling creek with big-leaf maple trees. – Dani Aubert
