Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Andrew Leahey’s song “Sign of the Times,” from his forthcoming release American Static Vol 2, due out on May 6, 2022 (Mule Kick Records). The first volume, American Static Vol 1, was released on Oct 22, 2021. Songs on the album were written by Andrew Leahey. It was engineered, mixed and produced by Jon Estes, and mastered by Parachute Mastering.
“Sign of the Times” is Andrew Leahey on lead vocals, harmony vocals, electric and acoustic guitars; Jay Dmuchowski on electric and acoustic guitars; Jon Estes on bass, piano, and keys; and Dan Holmes on drums.
“Sign of the Times” goes through some time changes itself, musically, as it carries you from a Beatles-esque beginning through an electric jam and back out — and the haunting lines “and I feel it start to crumble” come through and will haunt you.
I wrote this song in January 2021 while the TV blared in the background, showing a montage of clips from the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. I like to say I’m a political person who makes apolitical music, but desperate times call for desperate measures. (They also, I guess, call for three different time signatures in the same song.) I’ll admit that this is a strange one for the band — sort of a late-’60s British pop/rock vibe that gets pretty grungy in the chorus — but maybe strange times call for strange music, too. — Andrew Leahey
