Christmas and the winter holidays in general contain a certain ideal of hope, and this version of “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” captures those sentiments with all the depth, warmth, and shimmering we could want. Listen and you’ll see.
I love Christmas – and the spirit of the season – and have been recording a new Christmas song every year for a while now. I gravitated toward “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” since it would be the first time so many people would have the chance to ‘come home’ and see family after staying away last year due to the pandemic. I knew immediately I wanted Stevie Blacke to produce the record. I first met him while working on Fortunes (debut album) and was just blown away by his talent as well as how easy it is to work with him. For such a superstar, he is so kind too – he feels like I am with family when I work with him. My friend Nell Teare, who is an amazing director and producer, offered to shoot a live performance of this. I asked Stevie if he would accompany me, and he asked Leah to join us as well (she had also played on the live version). And the most incredible thing was that just a few minutes into the conversation with Leah, we found out that we’d gone to the same high school together! It was so serendipitous. I feel like I’ve known her my whole life. The whole experience was so great on so many levels. — Jesse Lynn Madera
