Video Premiere: Grace Pettis “Paper Boat (Live)”

Listen & Watch Video Premieres

Americana Highways presents this video premiere of Grace Pettis’ song “Paper Boat (Live)” from her recently released album Working Woman.  Working Woman was produced by Mary Bragg; engineered by Rachael Moore, assisted by Skyler Chuckry; mixed by Shani Gandhi at Forty-One Fifty, assisted by Erika Nalow; and mastered by Piper Payne at Infrasonic Sound.

Performers on this “Paper Boat (Live)” video are Grace Pettis on guitar and vocals; Katie Marie on drums; Ruby Dice on bass and background vocals; Casie Luong on keys and background vocals; and Sophia Johnson on lead guitar.  (On the album version of the song, musicians were Grace Pettis on lead vocals and acoustic guitar; Ellen Angelico on electric guitars; Kira Small on organ; Ryan Madora on bass; Megan Coleman on drums; and Mary Bragg on backing vocals.)

The video was directed and filmed by Kelly Ngo; filmed and edited by David Reinis; with production by Chromatone Studios and audio engineering and mixing by Joe Hilling.  The video garnered special thanks to Jay Vickers and Big House Sound and was recorded in Austin, Texas.   Grace Pettis has such a lovely lilt, it’s nice to see a live performance to put the visual together with the sounds you hear on her records.  Paper Boat is a song of wonder and sweetness, perfectly borne aloft by Grace herself in all her sonic manifestations –guitar, vocals, and the very songwriting itself.

This is a song about losing innocence and coming of age. Naivete is lost when a girl wrestles with the conflicting demands of being strong, nurturing, and fragile at the same time. It’s about looking back at where you’ve been, as opposed to where you are and where you’re going. Since my album Working Woman was recorded in Nashville with an all-womxn, all-star band, it seemed only fitting that the live video for “Paper Boat” featured an all-womxn, all-star band from my own stomping grounds, Austin, Texas. It was a dream to get to work with these incredible players. — Grace Pettis
