Song Premiere: Ben Balmer “The Runner”

Listen & Watch Song Premieres

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Ben Balmer’s song “The Runner” from his album Honky-Tonk Macbeth, scheduled for release on October 15. Honky-Tonk Macbeth was mixed and engineered by Justin Douglas at King Electric studios and Same Sky Productions, with assistant engineers Schivona Johnson and Jackie Goff. The album was produced by  Balmer and Justin Douglas.

“The Runner” is Ben Balmer on vocals, harmonica, and acoustic guitar; Josh Flowers on upright bass; Aaron Parks on drums and percussion; Eddie Dickerson on fiddle and harmony vocals; Cat Clemons on electric guitar and dobro; and Heidi Burson on harmony vocals.  Ben Balmer is a songwriting wordsmith, adeptly spinning whole lifetimes within each song.  In “The Runner,” he spins a yarn of star-crossed lovers and the murder that took place within their struggle to be together.

“The Runner” was inspired by my time performing in Scotland. I actually consulted with a medieval history scholar when I was doing my research for this song. It is the story of two women who fell in love in medieval Scotland, were then discovered, and fought to be together. I love a good murder song. — Ben Balmer
