Americana Highways presents this song premiere of Tommy Womack’s rockin’ version of “That Lucky Old Sun” (music by Beasley Smith and words by Haven Gillespie). The song will be on his new album, I Thought I Was Fine, which slated for release on October 15 via Schoolkids Records. This album was co-produced by Tommy Womack with Jonathan Bright (Raelyn Nelson Band). Tommy covered all the instruments on the song, except the drums which are courtesy of Jonathan.
In lieu of the perfunctory pandemic inspired solo acoustic album, Tommy Womack brings you this sweet offering of rock ‘n roll. And what could be better than a rock ‘n roll “That Lucky Old Son”? All the goodness of the appeal of rock n roll is born out in this project, with layers of Womack’s skillful guitar playing and the joy behind it.
I’ve always loved this song. Ray Charles did it, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash… but I’d never heard anybody rock it up before. It’s a song about survival, and maybe with a rock beat and some loud guitars, it’s also about some kind of triumph just down the road a piece.” —Tommy Womack
