Americana Highways is hosting this video premiere of Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs’ song “Black Crow,” from their forthcoming album Through the Smoke, set for release on July 30. Through the Smoke was produced, mixed and engineered by Brad Dollar, and mastered by Piper Payne with Infrasonic Mastering. All songs were written and performed by Laney Lou and The Bird Dogs
“Black Crow” is Ethan Demarais on bass; Matt Demarais on banjo and vocals; Lena Schiffer on guitar and vocals; Brian Kassay on fiddle, harmonica, mandolin, and vocals; Josh Moore on guitar and vocals. Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs sure know how to build suspense with long sustain blended with hypnotic, speedy stringed instruments. There might not be a lot that’s more ominous than a black crow, and this song, like its namesake, strikes at fears of mortality in a powerful way.
“Black Crow” is meant to elicit the image of a man knowing, but being unable to see death creeping in on all fronts, as he waits patiently while it sneaks in from behind. The Bird Dogs enjoy adding a juxtaposition to the joyous songs on our records with a dark element, and “Black Crow” is our anthem to celebrate the darkness (as well as the light) that lives within and around us all.- Josh Moore
