Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Nikki O’Neill’s song “That’s How You Lose Her,” from her forthcoming album World is Waiting. It was primarily recorded at Hayloft Studios in Los Angeles, CA except “That’s How You Lose Her” was recorded at BonfireLA Studios in Los Angeles, CA, and “Take Back What I Said” at Royal Studios in Memphis, TN. It was engineered by Joshua “Cartier” Cutsinger, except “That’s How You Lose Her” by Stephen Fahlsing and Joshua “Cartier” Cutsinger, and “Take Back What I Said” by Boo Mitchell; mixed by Ethan Allen at Sun Room Studios in Boaz, AL and mastered by Gavin Lurssen at Lurssen Mastering in Los Angeles, CA.
“That’s How You Lose Her” was written by Nikki O’Neill (Snowflower Music, ASCAP) and Paul Menser (Gorilla Trail Music, ASCAP). The song is Nikki O’Neill on lead vocals, rhythm guitar, and backing vocals; Joshua Pessar on lead and rhythm guitars; Rob Fresco on electric bass; Rich Lackowski on drums; Jon Gold on Hammond organ; Halina Janusz and Lisa Malsberger on backing vocals.
With a hard driving focus, Nikki O’Neill delivers some serious truth in this one, among the rockin’ layers.
I wrote it with Paul (Menser) because I wanted a high-energy song for my live shows. We submitted it for NPR’s Tiny Desk contest, so the guitars, bass and drums come from that video shoot. Joshua Pessar plays the blazing guitar solo. When we did the Hammond organ and vocal overdubs, I brought in Jon, Halina and Lisa from Jerry’s Middle Finger, and as you can hear at the end, Lisa, Halina and I went all out with our vocals! — Nikki O’Neill
