Mind Your Step is a must-have for anyone who fancies swaggery music with horns. Give this song a listen to whet your whistle then pre-order the album.

My last record, Dead Rock Star, was put together as the soundtrack for a screenplay that I’d written. So I already had my head wrapped around the idea of movies and editing. In our songwriting process, one of the ideas that Roger Brainard threw out was Killing Floor – which quickly got me to ‘Cutting Room Floor.’ From there I just fell into the idea of a fellow who’d always seen himself as the leading man, but he starts to get it that he was being edited out of her life.”

I think this was one of Mark Neill’s favorites, and he worked the band until we had it right. I’m pretty sure that we nailed the track after just two or three takes. But that was after spending hours working on that Motown groove. Mark also brought in Mackensie Rosser, a Valdosta singer who had worked with Mark at Soil of the South before. I believe that the track we used was either her first or second take. Beautiful singer. — Steve Baskin
