Americana Highways presents this song premiere of Chris Moyse’s “Live Til We Die” from his album Bitter Ballads & Cynical Prayers, due to be released March 20. Bitter Ballads & Cynical Prayers was produced by Shawn Byrne; engineered by Michael Esser and Shawn Byrne; mastered by Alex McCollough; and recorded at Sundog Recording Studio and Great Hill Studio in Nashville. “Live Til We Die” is Chris Moyse on acoustic guitar and vocals, Shawn Byrne on mandolin, slide guitar, and background vocals; Katie Blomarz on upright bass and background vocals; Erin Nelson on drums and background vocals; and Adam Haynes on fiddle.
With clear folksy music, Chris Moyse combines wry commentary with nostalgia, as he’s thankful we live til we die. Bitter Ballads & Cynical Prayers is precisely what its title implies, sardonic observation with stringed instruments in raw arrangements.
This song was somewhat inspired by a trip home for the holidays. The rest of it was just this character I had kicking around in my head for a while. He’s got some dubious world views – most of my favorite characters have a bit of moral ambiguity. He’s trying to make sense of what it’s like getting older. I needed a chorus that was short, to the point, and something I thought drunk folks would want to sing along to.. hence the the gang vocal at the end. — Chris Moyse
