Song Premiere: The Chuck Wagon Gang’s “Honey in the Rock”

Listen & Watch Song Premieres

Americana Highways brings you this premiere from the Chuck Wagon Gang’s upcoming tribute to the Carter family:  No Depression in Heaven:  The Gospel Songs of the Carter Family. The version of the song is “Honey in the Rock,” and features the Chuck Wagon Gang (Shaye Smith, alto singer; Stan Hill, tenor singer; Melissa Kemper, soprano singer; and Karl Smakula, bass singer and guitarist) with Mark Fain on upright bass and David Johnson on the acoustic guitar, mandolin, fiddle, resonator guitar, electric guitar, and cello.

If you have a soft spot for glorious vocal harmonies and the Carter family gospel music, this album by the Chuck Wagon Gang is for you. No Depression in Heaven will be the addition to your collection that you reach for again and again.

Probably the best known version of this is done by the Lewis Family. Visions of Lil Roy’s suspender generated trumpeting is sonomous with this song. But its roots go back much further, to the Carter Family, probably in the 1920s. Mother Maybelle said they learned the song at a revival. We enjoyed putting our Chuck Wagon Gang twist to this great old hymn. — Shaye Smith
