Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Melody Guy’s “Dry the Rivers,” the title track from the album released in January 2019. The album features Melody Guy on acoustic guitar and vocals, Michael Webb on B3 organ, bass, and piano, Rick Lonow on drums and percussion, Gary Nichols on baritone guitar, Chas Williams on dobro and guitars with Guy’s daughter Delaney Smith on harmony vocals.
The video was produced and edited by Erik Dodd with Ken Fall on camera, and Aric Ketcham as executive producer. This song originates in a dark space, and there’s a reason Guy asks you to “dry the rivers from her eyes,” and her vocals crack echoes in your heart. This is fine country music with all the good musical layers of dobro and baritone, while the video sets the context of a storm brewing.
My daughter Delaney Smith is singing harmony on this song as well, and when her harmonies come in, my heart starts to glow with happiness.
While making the video at Erik’s cool studio in Salt Lake City, I was really drawn to that awesome wicked devil mural in the back lot; it put faces to the bitter dark feelings that one suffering from depression can understand. It was freezing and perfect. Erik Dodd, and Ken Fall on camera and Aric Ketcham were behind the scenes helping me. It was great working with Erik, he is very artistically creative. — Melody Guy
