RJ Chesney

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of RJ Chesney’s song “A Southern Man,” the title track from his forthcoming album that is set for release on September 25. A Southern Man was produced by Zachary Ross & Jason Hiller; recorded, mixed and mastered by Jason Hiller; and recorded at Electrosound Studios in Los Angeles.

“A Southern Man” is RJ Chesney on lead vocals, acoustic guitar, and nylon guitar; Jason Hiller on bass, upright bass, background vocals, pump organ;  Zachary Ross on electric, acoustic, resonator, slide, nylon guitars, and background vocals; Deacon Marrquin on drums and percussion; Marty Rifkin on pedal steel and dobro; John J.T. Thomas on electric piano, organ and accordion; David Goodstein on drums; and Maesa Pullman, Rosa Pullman and Mary Scholz on background vocals.

As RJ tells us: “This song is deeply personal to me. It’s claiming my stake as ‘A Southern Man.’ I think now more than ever we need to be reminded that Southern men are as diverse as any other region of the country. In this song I pay tribute to the creative folks that have come out of the south, the public figures who used their “pulpit” to bring more love, kindness and equality to their fellow humans. Tennessee Williams, Jimmy Carter, Johnny Cash and Martin Luther King all inspired my heart, my soul, and my creativity.

“The Chorus was obviously inspired by current events. We are living in such divided times. It’s a plea for understanding and its also a firm statement that you as a fellow Southern Man have no right to tell me how to be. I was born in Macon, Georgia. I am a Southern Man by birth.  Growing up feeling so different, I often felt invisible.  Here, I am standing up and stating my case, pleading for unity and to live and let live.”

RJ Chesney magically blends soft spokenness with palpable power in this song, both traits of a Southern man that come across easily. This is a quality good listen and food for thought.
