Dave Haynes Six Cuts

Dave Haynes is a Los Angeles based blues- rock ‘n roll songwriter who has a brand 6 song EP hot off the presses, Six Cuts. This is an album about wheeling and dealing and scrapping to make it. There’s tension, struggle, and a lot of electric guitar fury – think ZZ Top and Cheap Trick with heartland rock blended in. Dave Haynes’ social media handle is @davehayesrocks and it’s perfectly appropriate.

On the opening track, we’re pulled into the thought process of someone who just got out of jail that day, with the memorable chorus “stay away from cutthroat alley.” There are “sleazy deals in the city streets, wanna go straight but you just won’t learn, into the night, crash and burn again.” It is a song that presses on the human compulsion to keep striving, the pulses where addictions live. The message about what this lifestyle feels like is something Dave Haynes can very clearly convey.

In “Blood Money”  it’s “blood money in, blood money out,” and driving electric guitar solos carry the vibe. “Trash Talking'” is entertaining Southern heartland rock, with a Petty-esque vocal style in a song about someone who’s just out for himself – a sad sack of trash:  “enough is enough he’s a trash talkin’ man.”

In “Protection Racket,” there’s a Blue Oyster Cult atmosphere, “banging at the door again, it’s time to collect, by baby she’s begging me, get us out of this….”

The electric guitars are loud all the way though this album, as the emotions and the struggles are all right there on the songs’ sleeves. It’s very much like Billy F Gibbons met Tom Petty and jammed all night.
