Haunted Like Human – “Family Name”

Americana Highways presents this premiere of Haunted Like Human’s song “Family Name” from their forthcoming album American Mythology, which is set for release on October 17. The album was engineered and mixed by Mitch Dane and mastered by Veronica Conners.

“Family Name” is Cody Clark on vocals and guitar; Dale Chapman on vocals; Byron House on bass; Paul Eckberg on percussion; Charlie Lowell on keys; and Cara Fox on cello.

Within region and place there’s the pinpoint of family – that’s what Haunted Like Human celebrates here in this sparsely arranged, vocally pristine folk song: “There on the porch that your grandfather built / Singing the songs that his grandmother sang / There’s a creak in the stairs / And it sounds like the family name.” The vocals are superb, the arrangements are clear with nothing noisy or stepping on anything else’s toes. It’s well-crafted music and a deeply thoughtful song.

“It’s easy to point to where we come from and show the ways that it defines us, like our accents and turns of phrase. But “Family Name” is about being who you come from and the ways it builds the person that you are. Family is a complicated matter, and all of the traditions and patterns and joy and heartache that come with it can never be untangled from who we are. The song holds the weight of everything that it means to carry the family name and all of the unseen things that are tucked into it, and it also begs the question of what we will do with that birthright and the life we will build for ourselves with it.” – Haunted Like Human (Dale Chapman + Cody Clark)
