The Storm Windows More Lucky

The Storm Windows are a band from the New York and Vermont region who initially had their nascent stage coalescing in Greenwich Village in Manhattan.  Taking their name from the John Prine song, the Storm Windows trio crafts reflective songs with a catchy vibe, this time on their six-song EP More Lucky, which is releasing this week.

On album opener “I’m Going to Memphis” sings the “Oh moon shine bright on the highway tonight, down on old I-55 / the trucks and the cars rolling underneath the stars, from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico.” And then later:  “There are four reasons you might choose the highway…” Listen to see if you concur they’ve covered all the bases.

On the next song, “We All Have Ghosts,” the touches of mandolin and fiddle are a spine chilly touch, in a good way, with lyrics that speak simple truths about life, among them: even if “she’s out there somewhere you just haven’t found her yet.” The vulnerable “sha la lie” vocals are uplifting.

The title track “More Lucky” is a song about signs in life that remind us that things are never quite equal, but, in spite of that: “this here life is like throwing dice, you gotta roll.” With shuffly beats and acoustic guitar and later a surprise sequence of gentle, jazz-type horns, this one is perfect for a summertime drive with the top down.

“Make a List” is a reflection of times we second guess ourselves, culminating in regrets about a love that may have gotten away. The imagery in the lyrics is hazy and palpable, and: “I wish you were on that list / there are some things you just can’t fix.” The mandolin here again is melodic.

This is a summertime EP: with roadtrip songs, songs of elusive love, and anthems sung with an easy, honest vocal tone and good quality roots rock arrangements, often with shuffly beats and mandolin and fiddle floating delightfully in the mix.
