I’ve seen Hayes Carll several times. I’ve seen the Band of Heathens several times. Both always put on great shows, but together? Hayes and the Heathens put on one of the best shows I have seen in a while. The performance was dynamic and electrifying.

Hayes and the Heathens finished up their tour promoting their upcoming self-titled album. They played just under 2 ½ hours to a sold out, very enthusiastic crowd at the legendary Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA. The Belly Up is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and Hayes and the Heathens definitely helped the party along.

They alternated between Hayes Carll songs, BOH songs and a couple from the upcoming LP, including the crowd favorite, “Nobody Ever Died From Weed.” In addition to the Carll and BOH penned tunes they included a few covers including a snippet from Tom Petty’s “You Don’t Know How I Feel” and Bob Dylan’s “The Man in Me” and Guy Clark’s “L.A. Freeway.”

Some of the Hayes Carll songs in the set were, “Drunken Poet’s Dream,” “KMAG YOYO,” “Beaumont” and “You Get It All.”  Band of Heathens tunes included “Jackson Station” “Green grass of California” and “Hurricane.” The latter is actually a cover of Levon Helm’s song but is one of the best known Heathen songs.

The crowd danced and sang along with almost every song and stayed until the very last note. The album is set for release on October 4th and I for one can’t wait to get my copy.
